A new study suggests that the government may be responsible for allowing Pfizer to increase its price of a popular erectile dysfunction drug, which has been on the rise.
The study, published online May 4 in theBritish Medical Journal, was led by Dr. Andrew M. MacKenzie, professor of urology at Imperial College London and a director of the British Medical Association’s urology unit.
The study, which was presented at a meeting of the European Association for Sexual Medicine in London, involved a cohort of more than 1,500 people in Europe who were prescribed Viagra, a drug that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat erectile dysfunction in men between 18 and 64 years of age. The study is the first to test the impact of this drug on sexual health.
The researchers found that the drug increased the likelihood of getting a erection after one month. However, this was only about a 1 in 10. In addition, Viagra did not increase the number of sexual encounters.
“The results from this study do not indicate that the drug increases sexual desire or the likelihood of an erection,” said the authors.
Viagra is available in 50mg and 100mg pills and is approved by the FDA to treat ED. The drug is sold as a treatment for men with erectile dysfunction and is approved for use by the NHS.
